“Costs, Responsibilities of Employers and the Promise of New Discoveries” with Alex Jung
The pipeline of new discoveries is robust and costs are likely to go up at the same time more diseases will be better managed or cured. Employers need a new conversation around the role they want to play in prevention and managing conditions with the advent of new therapies. They have a duty to employees to be better informed because the therapies will be much more complex than the chronic maintenance generic drugs they are used to on formulary.
Their partners, like PBMs, won't solve the cost issue for them without greater emphasis on how medical premiums are meant to be used. Drugs can prevent more costly inpatient hospitalizations, surgeries and procedures but the dialogue around unit pricing will be irrelevant when customized biologics can cure or stave off major complications of a disease.
The presentation focuses on costs, responsibilities of stakeholders (especially employers) and the promise of new discoveries.
“Finding the Value of Care and Improved Health” with Chris McSwain
Healthcare reform been at the forefront of public debate as the new Administration took office in January, but thus far, these discussions have focused almost exclusively on healthcare coverage and financing. Neither better care nor better health have been a major focal point of these deliberations. Yet, to employers, the value of care and improved health are paramount in the employer’s role in healthcare going forward. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the discussion of specialty pharmaceuticals. Chris McSwain, IBI’s new President, will discuss this fundamental issue in the context of several IBI research studies (including The High Cost of Low Prevalence Disease and Finding the Value in Health – IBI’s research with Chief Financial Officers). Chris also will bring to this presentation his perspective and insights from a decade in managing employer benefits programs, including at Walmart, Whirlpool and Scana.

Chris McSwain has been appointed the President-elect of Integrated Benefits Institute. He will become President beginning April 1, 2017. With over 20 years of experience in the employer sector, Chris brings with him a new perspective as he begins to direct IBI’s activities and steward its research agenda. Before joining IBI, Chris led human resource transformation at Walmart, Whirlpool, General Dynamics, Novartis, Syngenta and SCANA. At each, Chris solved complex health, wellbeing, productivity, and human capital challenges to increase business performance, manage costs and produce breakthrough levels of employee engagement. Most recently, Chris served as the Chief Strategy Officer for Aasonn, in addition to growing his consulting practice and pursuing entrepreneurial interests with early stage start-ups. He has been a board member for Dossia, the Center for Health Value Innovation, a Global Knowledge Exchange Network Delegate, and World at Work Benefits Advisory Council among others. He served as a member of the IBI Board of Directors beginning in 2005 and as IBI Board Chair from 2006 to 2010. In 2013, he co-founded WorldWideWellbeing.org.
Alex Jung is a partner in Parthenon EY. Prior to joining EY, she was the Senior Vice President leading Walgreens Corporate Strategy based in Deerfield, IL. Mrs. Jung has over 30 years of experience working on strategic growth and risk mitigation engagements. She began her career with Arthur Andersen and after ten years moved into consulting with Mercer as the leader of the National Health Care Analysis Unit, helping to architect one of the first data analytics platforms. She later became the Managing Director for the General Board of the United Methodist Church. Alex returned to consulting to lead the health care practice at Aon Consulting and their significant growth into the number one consulting firm in the space after the acquisition of Hewitt Associates. She is a regular speaker at events such as the California Governor’s Women’s Conference, World Healthcare Congress, Midwest Business Group on Health, Crain’s Annual Health Care Conference, the Benefits Management Expo, the Self Insurance Association of America, John Marshall Law School, and HRMAC where she serves as the Chair for the Total Rewards Interest Group. She sits on the advisory board of the Michael Reese Health Trust and the Healthy Chicago initiative. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Respiratory Health Association and Chair of the Health and Wellness Council of the City of Chicago’s Chamber of Commerce.
